Fourth of July – 2011

July 3, 2011

The picture is one of my husband’s shots, from where we spent last July Fourth. A friend of the family has this amazing apartment – I mean LOOK at the view! And we love spending the Fourth up there, the TV is on in the living room with the music spilling out on the veranda where we watch the fireworks and DC spread out across the river. If you look down from the veranda, the Iwo Jima Memorial is right there.. and the crowds around it watching are wonderful to look at as well.

This year, even though the invitation is as always open – this year we won’t be taking advantage of that view. This year, we’ll be at the airport in the afternoon, saying goodbye. The Army – in the wisdom it has become famous for – decided that the class could have a pass, but that they needed to be back by midnight. So I’ll join the ranks of those who aren’t with the one they love on a “family day”.

To those who won’t be with their partner tomorrow, who will watch the fireworks with a battle buddy or on TV – we at Left Face send our support. To the ones who are at a hospital bedside, supporting that wounded warrior, we send our love.  We’ll be thinking of the troops on the FOBs, in the field, on the ships, on post/base, the ones listening and analyzing, the ones making sure that the troops have what they need, the ones cooking the meals and getting that pay straightened out.

Happy Fourth to all of you.  Wherever you are, whoever you are with, we wish you a safe and happy day.

That really sucks. Hopefully the time you do get to spend together will be wonderful. I’ll be around all weekend writing a manuscript. Feel free to call Monday if you want to chat. Love you!
