Over? no, not by a long shot

September 3, 2010

If you had been living in a cave, and just stepped out, you could be forgiven, after watching the news,  for thinking that the war in Iraq was over, everyone was home, all was hunky dory wonderful… tra lee  tra la..

We know better.

I personally was thankful that the President’s speech wasn’t the strut across a carrier deck, bombastic, it’s all over speech we watched all those years ago, all those killed and wounded ago, all those deployments ago.  The credit he gave the troops and the families – was welcome.  The political bits, not so much, but I suppose one has to expect it.

What’s really pissing me off – the media!  The whole let’s find families and get their reactions, the whole “now that it’s over” bit!  Seriously??  SRSLY? it’s NOT over, there are over 50,000 still there, there are rotations still ongoing, and everyone is still getting haz duty pay.  It’s NOT over.

I completely agree. Not only is it not over, according to the military response to the President’s speech, the violence has escalated. It was a topic I discussed on my blog the other day. Are we hanging our troops out to dry? With smaller numbers, they are more vulnerable. Just how it works, but it is my husband over there!

As long as we’ve got troops deployed in uniform with weapons, we’re engaged in combat operations. Put a skirt on it and call it whatever you want, but if our guys are dying, it’s combat. the media IS America, and they’ve sacrificed not a whit, so why would it be different now?

They’ve already built a Burger King there. In my experience, any occupation that includes at Burger King is there to stay.
