Real Warriors Campaign – Mental Health Month

May 22, 2010

It’s the One Year Anniversary of the Real Warriors Campaign.    May is Mental Health Month and the Real Warriors Campaign, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary on May 21,  asked us  to help spread the word about the many psychological health tools and resources available for active duty service members, National Guardsmen and Reservists, veterans and military families. Service members bear the great responsibility of protecting our nation, and as Americans, it is our duty to support their physical and psychological strength.

I was on a Bloggers Roundtable call with members of Real Warriors Campaign, and I brought up a recent conversation I had with a friend.  She was helping deal with another case of family violence, a soldier with PTSD who had been asking for help, but whose unit was not very helpful and  wasn’t able to get him help with a counseling session, until JULY!!!  They reinforced their message – go up the chain!  if your platoon sgt won’t help, go higher.  Go HIGHER until someone listens, takes you seriously and gets you the help you need.   The Real Warriors Campaign has a 24 hour live chat function, where you can chat with a health consultant at DCoE Outreach Center.

Stigma often prevents service members, veterans and families from getting the psychological health help they need, when they need it most. Common barriers to care include beliefs that:
• It would harm my career
• I would be seen as weak
• Members of my unit would have less confidence in me

The Real Warriors Campaign is a multimedia public education campaign designed to combat that stigma and encourage service members to seek appropriate treatment. At the heart of the campaign are Real Warriors who have had the strength to reach out for treatment and are proving through example that reaching out makes a difference and that getting help does not mean the end of a military career.

In addition to practical articles and many other resources (see a complete list below), the Real Warriors Campaign Web site ( includes a live chat function that will connect individuals with health consultants at the DCoE Outreach Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
