Elmo and military kids!!

March 31, 2009

I received this email from PBS – and it’s all about Sesame Street and military kids and my granddaughter’s favourite person in the world -ELMO!!!!!!

I remember during my husband’s first deployment, the DVD of the Sesame Street show about deployment was very popular with the children of the National Guard unit we were with. It gave such great explanations to children using their best friends on TV. I was impressed that Sesame Street and PBS were so supportive of the military kids. Now – there’s something new!

“I am writing to let you know that PBS Engage is featuring Sesame Workshop’s Vice President for Outreach and Educational Practices Jeanette Betancourt, as part of the ongoing PBS Engage series called “Five Good Questions.” The series features a PBS celebrity or insider and asks visitors to send in questions to be answered the following week. The blog series has been very successful and we are thrilled to have Dr. Betancourt as our feature this week.

Jeanette’s latest project is called “Coming Home: Military Families Cope with Change.” The show, premiering April 1st (check local listings), is part of Sesame Workshop’s “Talk, Listen, Connect” initiative to help families and children dealing with military deployments and combat-related injuries.

This is a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about the coping with family changes, Sesame Workshop’s outreach initiatives, or whatever else is on your mind. We’ll pick five questions for Jeanette to answer and post her responses next week on the Engage blog.
